Versilia
Versilia, in the north-western part of Tuscany, has always been renowned throughout Europe for its unique landscape and every year welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists. A fantastic mix of sea, beautiful beaches, hills, charming towns and impressive marble mountains, all merged in an incomparable harmony, which forms one of the most attractive and exclusive districts in Italy. Versilia includes the towns of Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Seravezza, Stazzema, Camaiore, Massarosa and Viareggio. Along the coast, a few meters from the sea, there are a lots of pine forests that stretch for kilometers. Perhaps the most famous, the Versiliana park (80 hectares), is located in Marina di Pietrasanta and was made famous by some poems by Gabriele D'Annunzio who stayed there and was inspired by it. In the pine forests, in general, there are many activities to do: riding school, tennis courts, cycle paths, spaces for picnics.
Viareggio
Defined "the pearl of Tirreno’s sea" thanks to its Art Nouveau buildings, Viareggio is often recognized as the capital city of Versilia. The sea on one side, the mountains on the other, from the pine forest to the dockyard, to get lost in the narrow streets full of typical fish restaurants. The development of the city began at the beginning of the 19th century when the Duchess Maria Luisa di Borbone had built the first harbour and slowly it became a privileged tourist destination for the noble Italian families, first of them was Paolina Bonaparte. Not only sea, but also art: the Civic Museums of Villa Paolina and the Maritime Museum satisfy visitors from all over the world every year. The promenade, full of art deco decorations and characteristic buildings, which have remained unchanged over the years. The city has also dedicated to its historic Carnival event, la Cittadella, a large urban park where work the masters of papier-mache, they’re Viareggio’s artisans who build giant floats, typical of the Carnival parade.
